According to Dr. Shrey Kumar Srivastav - Senior Consultant, Physician, Sharda Hospital (India), air pollution is not just about dust and fine particles but also a complex mixture of harmful substances, including particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These pollutants enter the body mainly through the respiratory tract, leading to oxidative stress, inflammation and immune dysfunction.
Long-term exposure to air pollution is linked to:
- Increased risk of respiratory infections.
- Aggravates conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- Weakens the immune response, making it more difficult for the body to fight pathogens.
Can immune-boosting drugs help combat today's air pollution?
“Immune boosters include a range of vitamins, minerals and compounds that are thought to boost the immune system,” says Dr. Srivastav. “While they cannot eliminate pollutants or prevent exposure, they can boost the body’s immunity.”
Neutralize free radicals
Pollutants generate free radicals that damage cells and tissues, contributing to oxidative stress. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, can neutralize these harmful molecules, reducing cell damage.
Reduce inflammation
Chronic inflammation caused by pollutants can weaken immunity. Anti-inflammatory compounds, such as omega-3 fatty acids and turmeric, can help calm this response.
Strengthen the respiratory system
Nutrients such as vitamin D and zinc play an important role in maintaining respiratory health, helping the respiratory system to resist pollutants.
Supports overall immune function
A healthy immune system will help the body fight infections caused by air pollution.
