Bathing in cold water in winter can bring a refreshing feeling and some health benefits, but according to experts, this habit is not suitable for everyone and needs to be done carefully.
Dr. Ruben Bhasin Passi, dermatologist at CK Birla Hospital (Gurugram, India) said that cold water therapy can help boost blood circulation, improve alertness and support muscle relaxation. However, winter makes the body face more challenges when exposed to cold water.
The impact of cold water on the body in winter
When exposed to cold water, blood vessels on the skin contract, a natural reaction of the body to keep important organs warm. This reflex can help increase alertness and improve blood circulation when the body warms up again afterwards. Many people feel more energetic after showering with cold water, at any time of the year.
In addition, cold water also has the effect of reducing muscle pain after exercise thanks to its ability to soothe inflammation, so this method is often applied by athletes. Short exposure to cold water also helps stimulate the nervous system, bringing a feeling of mental refreshment.
Not everyone is suitable
Dr. Passi warns that in winter, the body already has to work harder to keep warm. Sudden exposure to cold water can cause excessive vasoconstriction, increasing the risk for people with cardiovascular disease, asthma, arthritis, immunodeficiency or the elderly.
In these subjects, taking cold baths can lead to sudden high blood pressure, shortness of breath, stiff joints, or even an increased risk of hypothermia if exposed to cold for a long time. In these cases, the risk may far exceed the benefit.
How to get a safe cold shower in winter
For healthy people who want to try cold baths, experts recommend doing it slowly and controlled. The time of exposure to cold water should only last about 30–60 seconds for the body to adapt in time, avoiding shock to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Dr. Passi emphasized that it is necessary to listen to the body's reactions. If signs such as dizziness, tremors, shortness of breath or too cold appear, you should stop immediately and quickly warm up with towels, warm clothes or hot drinks.
Suitable choices in winter
Although showering with cold water can bring some benefits, winter is the time when the body needs to be kept warm to protect the immune system. For many people, showering with warm water or steam is still a more suitable option, helping to relax muscles, improve sleep and limit dry skin often encountered in cold weather.
