Born into a family from the Central region who came to Ho Chi Minh City to start a business, Uyen Nhi recalled the years her parents struggled to make a living.
No one in the family studied medicine, but they always hoped that one of their children would become a doctor. "At that time, I just thought simply that I had to try to study really well," she recounted.
During her high school years, she attended specialized classes in natural sciences and set a goal to take the entrance exam to medical school.
I don't dare to promise anything to my parents in advance, I just know to try my best" - she shared. In the end, that effort was rewarded when she was admitted to the medical major with the benchmark score of that year.
Entering the medical university, standing among many good students, she became even more determined to study to achieve the goal of becoming a resident doctor, a path considered challenging but also very prestigious in the medical industry.
After passing the resident doctor program, during a internship at Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, she had the opportunity to meet many patients with severe dermatological diseases. That experience made her change her perspective on this specialty.
Many people think dermatology is just for beauty, but when they go to the clinic, they see that there are many seriously ill patients, very pitiful and needing long-term treatment" - she said.
It was that understanding that made her decide to stick with the field of dermatology.
In the early years of working, the treatment of many dermatological diseases, especially psoriasis, still faced many limitations when the drugs were mainly topical drugs, and the effectiveness was not high. When world medicine developed and biological drugs began to be accessed in Vietnam, she was trusted by the Board of Directors to build a thematic clinic on psoriasis.
When treatment is effective and patients improve, coming back just to say thank you, that is a great happiness for a doctor" - she shared.
Dr. Pham Thi Uyen Nhi believes that women today take on many roles: Both mother, wife, and professional and sometimes manager.
But with the softness, flexibility and endurance of women, I believe that everyone can become'supermen' in a very gentle way, being a rose of society and a gentle mother in the family," Ms. Nhi shared.
