Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the patient who received the kidney was a 13-year-old boy, diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure on the basis of IgA nephropathy, who was undergoing regular dialysis at the hospital but did not respond well to dialysis.
Before surgery, the patient was prescribed a CT scan with vascular reconstruction and Doppler ultrasound to assess the degree of fibrosis and occlusion of the pelvic blood vessels. The results showed that the external iliac artery was fibrotic with many calcifications, and the external iliac vein was completely blocked.
After confirming the compatibility of the kidney with the boy at Children's Hospital 2, the work of organ retrieval and transportation was carried out, the child patient underwent kidney transplant surgery from a brain-dead donor in Binh Duong province.
According to the family, the patient was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in 2020 when he was in 4th grade. Since then, he has had to temporarily put his studies on hold and regularly go to Children's Hospital 2 for dialysis every week, affecting his family's life to some extent. The patient's parents were eager to donate a kidney to save their child, but it was not a match. Therefore, the patient was put on the waiting list for a transplant from a brain-dead donor.
After a successful kidney transplant, this is the patient's first Tet since receiving the transplant. Witnessing her child being revived from the kidney of a brain-dead donor, the patient's mother choked with gratitude and remembered the journey of treatment with her child.
“I thank the doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital 2 and my uncle for donating this kidney to me. I am very grateful because now I have my health back and can go to school normally…”, the patient shared.
Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach - Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City, said that up to now, the hospital has performed 33 kidney transplants for children. Most of the organs were from living donors, of the same bloodline.
Kidney transplantation from a brain-dead donor demonstrates humanity. Kidney transplantation is also one of three kidney replacement methods, considered the most optimal in the treatment of chronic kidney failure. Because it helps patients reintegrate into life, with a better quality of life.
