Nutritional deficiencies can cause muscle spasms

THIỆN NHÂN (THEO onlymyhealth) |

Muscle spasms can be caused by a number of factors, including deficiencies in nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium.

According to the Journal of Preventive Medicine and Hygiene, a muscle twitch is a sudden, strong, and uncontrollable contraction of a muscle. The twitches can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and are often painful. Muscle twitches can occur in any muscle in the body, but are most common in the calves, thighs, or arms.

Vitamin D deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency can cause serious health problems, especially for bones and muscles. Vitamin D plays an important role in helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two minerals essential for the growth and maintenance of healthy bones. In some cases, it can also lead to muscle problems, including twitching and spasms, also known as myoclonus. Some common places where muscle twitches can occur include the eyelids, hands, and calves.

To reduce symptoms, it's important to get enough vitamin D, not only from sun exposure but also from nutrient-rich foods, including fatty fish, egg yolks, mushrooms, and fortified foods.

Calcium deficiency

Hypocalcemia (or calcium deficiency) is a condition in which the body does not have enough calcium in the blood to maintain normal functions. Calcium is a very important mineral that makes up a large part of the structure of bones and teeth, helping to maintain their hardness and stability. When calcium levels are too low, symptoms such as muscle aches, cramps, and fatigue can result.

The best way to overcome this deficiency is to add calcium-rich foods to your diet. These include dairy products, cheese, yogurt, soybeans, tofu, green leafy vegetables, and nuts.

Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium deficiency (or hypomagnesemia) is an often overlooked health condition that can affect many important functions in the body. Magnesium is a mineral that helps regulate muscle and nerve function and maintain blood sugar and blood pressure. It also facilitates the digestion of fatty acids and proteins, which are necessary for DNA replication.

However, low levels of this mineral can cause disruptions in the body. Common symptoms include nausea, constipation, headaches, nighttime leg cramps, and many others. In severe cases, some people may also experience muscle twitching and tremors.

Prevention and treatment of magnesium deficiency includes eating a healthy, balanced diet rich in magnesium-rich foods, such as green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds.
