Recent research shows that supplementing enough magnesium can also contribute to improving sleep quality in adults.
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by scientists from Fudan University (China) in collaboration with US researchers followed 613 adults for 6 years. The results showed that in healthy people without diabetes, supplementing with 100mg of magnesium per day was associated with a 58% reduction in the risk of insomnia, especially difficulty falling asleep and waking up too early.
Researchers believe that magnesium can affect the production of neurotransmitter GABA - a compound that plays an important role in relaxing the nervous system and maintaining sleep. When the body is deficient in magnesium, GABA levels can decrease, affecting sleep quality.
Not only causing insomnia, magnesium deficiency can also cause the body to show many signs such as prolonged fatigue, muscle spasms, eyelid tremors, rapid heartbeat, chronic pain and increase the risk of osteoporosis in the elderly.
According to the recommendations of nutrition experts, adults should prioritize magnesium supplementation through a diet of whole grains, beans, nuts and green vegetables. The use of magnesium supplements requires the advice of a doctor, especially for people with kidney disease to avoid the risk of excess magnesium affecting health.
