Cold weather increases the risk of angina and myocardial infarction

Thanh Thanh |

When the weather turns cold, the risk of cardiovascular events such as high blood pressure, angina and myocardial infarction increases significantly.

Mr. N.V.V (55 years old, Long An province) was admitted to Xuyen A Long An General Hospital (Long An province) with low blood pressure and low blood oxygen. According to his family, 1 hour before being admitted to the hospital, Mr. V suddenly had severe chest pain and difficulty breathing.

The doctor diagnosed the patient with acute myocardial infarction in the first hour with complications of cardiogenic shock, a critical condition. Immediately after stabilizing the patient's vital signs, a coronary angiogram was performed. The doctor discovered a complete blockage right after the anterior interventricular artery (the main blood vessel that supplies the heart).

The team of doctors from the Cardiology Department performed angioplasty and placed a stent at the site of the blockage. After placing the stent, the blood flow was completely restored. The patient's condition gradually stabilized and he recovered well. After 5 days, Mr. V was discharged from the hospital.

Not only Mr. V, the weather drops to 19 to 20 degrees in the early morning and at night like now in the South, this hospital continuously receives many cases of acute myocardial infarction.

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Cong Van - Head of the Cardiology Department of Xuyen A Long An General Hospital said that when the weather turns cold, the blood vessels in the body constrict, blood pressure increases. The decrease in temperature causes the body to stimulate the production of red blood cells and platelets, which can easily cause blood clots to form, increasing the risk of blood vessel blockage.

In addition, in cold conditions, the heart muscle needs more oxygen to function. This increases the risk of cardiovascular events such as high blood pressure, angina, myocardial infarction, etc.

To minimize the risk of cardiovascular events in cold weather, people should pay attention to keeping their bodies warm and not exercising too early. Ensure nutrition, drink enough water and maintain regular physical activity.

In addition, have regular check-ups and follow your doctor's treatment. In case of chest pain, shortness of breath or sudden fatigue, go to a medical facility immediately for timely examination and treatment.
