Assad's wife files for divorce

The wife of deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has filed for divorce due to dissatisfaction with life in Russia, according to Turkish and Arab press sources.

Asma al-Assad is said to be looking to return to London to start a new life.

Asma has filed a petition with a Russian court requesting special permission to leave Moscow, the Jerusalem Post reported. The petition is currently being considered by Russian authorities.

Asma al-Assad, a dual British-Syrian national, was born and raised in London in a family of Syrian origin. In 2000, Asma moved to Syria and married Bashar al-Assad at the age of 25.

While Bashar al-Assad has been granted asylum in Russia, he remains subject to severe restrictions. He is not allowed to leave Moscow and is banned from taking part in any political activity.

In addition, there is unconfirmed information that all of Mr. Assad's assets have been frozen.

His brother, Maher al-Assad, has not yet been granted asylum in Russia, and his application is under review. Maher and his family are under house arrest in Russia.

Bashar al-Assad was ousted in early December after a fierce campaign by opposition forces led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Although HTS is listed as a terrorist organization by the US, the Washington administration decided to cancel the $10 million reward for HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
