Bacteria identified that hospitalized 54 students in Lao Cai

Epidemiological investigation results show that 54 students of Lao Cai College were hospitalized due to Salmonella infection, causing poisoning.

On October 22, information from the Lao Cai Province Center for Disease Control determined that the reason for the hospitalization of students from Lao Cai College was food poisoning.

Of these, 4 dishes prepared by the canteen for dinner on October 8 were found to be positive for Salmonella bacteria: pickled cucumber, grilled lolot leaves, fried chicken, and water spinach soup.

In addition, four samples taken from four patients who had not taken antibiotics were also found positive for Salmonella paratyphi B.

As reported by Lao Dong Newspaper, at around 4:30 p.m. on October 9, a number of students in the dormitory of Lao Cai College, campus 1 (Bac Cuong ward, Lao Cai city) were hospitalized with symptoms of digestive disorders, suspected of food poisoning after eating at the cafeteria.

Immediately after receiving the information, Lao Cai Department of Health directed relevant units to investigate, verify, collect water, food and patient samples for necessary tests.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes gastroenteritis, or gastrointestinal infection. Initial symptoms include high fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting.
