LD25033: 2 children with brain cancer, mother confused

Quỳnh Chi |

Having 2 sons with brain cancer, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam is confused because she does not have money to treat them.

In Bac Thanh village (Yen Hoa commune, Ha Tinh province), the family situation of Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam (born in 1984) makes many people sympathize.

Ms. Tam and her husband have 3 children: Phan Thuy Linh born in 2013, Phan Xuan Nam born in 2014 and Phan Xuan Phuc born in 2020.

Previously, Ms. Tam worked as a garment worker near her home, earning about 7 million VND/month, while her husband, a construction worker, also earned about 8 million VND.

Since 2013, after getting married, Ms. Tam has quit her job as a worker, stayed at home to work in the fields, and took care of her elderly and sick mother-in-law.

The 3 children of Ms. Tam and her husband were born one after another, the small family laughed happily... Ms. Tam's husband went to work as a construction worker, in the village outside the commune, he took on any job, Ms. Tam took care of the children while working 4 hectares of rice fields. Although they do not have much to eat and drink, their small, happy home is full...

Disaster hit a small family when in 2020, Ms. Tam's second child, Phan Xuan Nam, was diagnosed with brain cancer. The pain was even greater, the family was worried about treating Nam but not yet satisfied, and in early 2025, Phan Xuan Phuc also discovered brain cancer similar to his brother.

Feeling sorry for her sick child and poor family situation, Ms. Tam cried and was in tears. "My family is poor, both sides of my family are only farmers, not well off. After crying all the time, I have to worry about borrowing money from everywhere to treat my children" - Ms. Tam said tearfully.

Ms. Tam said that Nam had undergone brain surgery 3 times but then suffered complications and had a whole body infection. Phuc had undergone surgery twice, received radiotherapy at the 108 Military Hospital, then returned to the National Children's Hospital for chemotherapy; Phuc is currently sick and cannot walk on his own.

"No matter how difficult it is, I still try to take care of my children. In addition to the money supported by both families, I have borrowed more from outside to take care of the children. The road ahead is still long, but I have to try hard when I'm sick...", Ms. Tam said chokingly.

Faced with Ms. Tam's difficult family situation, the local government once called on the people to donate 15 million VND.

Talking to Lao Dong reporter, Mr. Tran Van Trong - Head of Bac Thanh village said that Ms. Tam's family situation is very difficult, in recent years, her 2 more children with cancer have been in even more difficulty. Not to mention, Ms. Tam and her husband also raise their old mother who had lost her hearing and had difficulty living.

"Ms. Tam used to work as a worker, had an income, now she is no longer working and has more money to treat her child. Ms. Tam's husband is a construction worker but his job is not regular, and he takes care of his children in the hospital, and his elderly mother is sick. When there is no job, who will hire him to do it all, so his income is unstable, said Mr. Trong.

According to Mr. Trong, understanding the difficult circumstances of Ms. Tam's family, the locality called on the people to support her family, but the amount of support compared to the treatment cost was not worth much.

"We really hope that benefactors will pay attention and provide additional support to Ms. Tam's family" - Mr. Trong said.
