LD26038: Old and weak grandparents try to raise two seriously ill grandchildren

Son died in an accident, two young grandchildren continuously suffer from dangerous diseases, elderly and weak grandparents fall into poverty in a poor village...

In Na Bienh village, Mai Chau commune, Phu Tho province, the situation of Mr. Kha Van Cuong (50 years old) and Mrs. Kha Thi Noi (53 years old) makes many people feel sorry.

Mr. Cuong has congenital eye defects, weak health, and frequent joint pain. Without stable jobs, he does whatever anyone hires him to do, so his income is precarious, but he still has to try to be a support for the whole family. Mrs. Noi is busy farming, weak but has to take care of her young grandchild.

Previously, Mr. Cuong and Mrs. Noi's family also relied on their son, Mr. Kha Van Hoi. In 2017, Mr. Hoi went to the South to work for a company, earning about 16 million VND/month, regularly sending money back to help his parents raise his wife and children.

The incident struck at the end of 2024, when Mr. Kha Van Hoi unfortunately died in a traffic accident. That sudden departure caused the family to lose their only economic pillar, leaving irreparable pain...

Mr. Cuong said that since his son passed away, the house has always been empty. Every time he looks at his two young grandchildren, he feels even more heartbroken... "I already feel sorry for my orphaned grandchild, now she is still constantly sick. Being a grandfather and a father but not being able to take care of my son and grandchild, sometimes I am very helpless," Mr. Cuong choked up.

After her husband's funeral, Ms. Lo Thanh Nga - Mr. Hoi's wife - left her hometown to work far away at a company, occasionally returning to visit her children when there was work. The two young children have since stayed with their elderly paternal grandparents...

Mr. Cuong and his wife's level-4 house has seriously deteriorated, the walls are peeling, the roof leaks every time it rains heavily. The floor is damp, cracked, and only a few old items are in the furniture. Without conditions to repair, the house is increasingly dilapidated, posing many safety risks, especially during the rainy and storm season.

On rainy nights, grandparents almost stay up all night. Mrs. Noi hugged her youngest grandchild and wheezed because of pneumonia, while Mr. Cuong quietly took a basin to collect leaking rainwater. The worry of illness was always present in that small house...

Mr. Hoi's eldest son, Kha Quang Trung (born in 2019), suffered from severe pneumonia in early 2020 and had to be hospitalized for treatment for many days. When his father was still alive, the family could manage expenses. After his father passed away, all burdens fell on their shoulders.

Mr. Hoi's youngest son, Kha Trung Hau (born in 2023), only a few months later, was continuously hospitalized for severe pneumonia. The family took him for treatment in the locality and then transferred him to the National Children's Hospital, staying in the hospital for nearly a month... At one point, the doctor informed Mr. Cuong and his wife about Hau's condition, predicting that he would only have about 5% chance of survival. Fortunately, Hau overcame the death penalty but his health was very weak, and he also suffered from muscle atrophy, requiring long-term monitoring...

At that time, we only knew to pray to God, pray to doctors to save my grandchild. No matter how much I had to borrow, I tried to save my grandchild's life...", Mrs. Noi said choked with emotion.

To have money to save his grandchild, Mr. Cuong and his wife had to borrow from banks and borrow from everywhere nearly 50 million VND. That debt has not been paid to this day. Relatives and villagers occasionally provide some support, but everyone is in difficulty, so they can only help somewhat.

Currently, Mr. Cuong's family does not have social assistance. Grandparents are starting to age, are weak, and their memory is no longer clear. Every time their grandchild gets sick, the two people rush to take him to the hospital in constant worry.

Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Kha Duc Khanh - Head of Na Bienh village, Mai Chau commune - said that Mr. Cuong and Mrs. Noi's family is a particularly difficult household in the locality.

We really hope philanthropists will pay attention and help so that the children have conditions for long-term treatment, and the family's situation is less difficult and less deprived," Mr. Khanh shared.
