Mr. Quang recounted that a few years ago, he was hospitalized in a serious condition. His body was tired, vomiting when he ate, and his strength was exhausted. When he was taken to the emergency room at Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital, doctors diagnosed him with a blood infection and severe kidney failure.
I only had 20% of my life left, the doctor said. At that time I thought I wouldn't survive," he recalled.
The tragedy did not stop there. Mr. Quang was a victim of Agent Orange from birth, his body only had one kidney. When the only kidney weakened, everything almost collapsed.
“Because I only have one kidney, plus a blood infection, my kidneys are declining rapidly. I have no other choice but to have dialysis,” he shared.
Life, which was already difficult, became even more difficult. Mr. Quang has married but has no children yet. The couple rents a room in Binh Tri Dong ward, Ho Chi Minh City. His wife works as a salaried worker, and her income is only enough to cover daily living expenses.
Behind him is his family in his hometown with many burdens. His father is 82 years old this year, his younger sister suffers from mental illness and is being treated at a hospital in his hometown. What makes many people choked up is that to have money for his child to have dialysis, the old father had to beg for food.
My father is old, 82 years old. Many times he is very shy... but my father still begs to send money in for me to get dialysis," Mr. Quang said, his voice lowered.
The treatment cost is about 3-5 million VND per month, not including medicine costs. For healthy people, this number is not too large, but for his family, it is a burden.
Before getting sick, Mr. Quang studied accounting and worked for a few years. He came to Ho Chi Minh City with the desire to earn money to help his parents and take care of his younger sister. But the incident happened too quickly, making all plans unfinished.
Many times I also collapsed, feeling like I became a burden. But thinking about it, being alive is still lucky. I still have my wife by my side, and my father still tries for me, that's enough to stand up," he said.
What moved him the most was that his young wife was still by his side even though life was difficult. "I once told my wife to remarry, but she refused. She said as long as she loves me, she will stay. So I try to live," he shared.
On days when his health is weak, he tries to do small housework to share the burden with his wife. Simple conversations, words of encouragement each other help them overcome difficult times.
Four years since the onset of the disease, Mr. Quang still persistently undergoes dialysis three times a week. Although life is full of worries, he chooses to be optimistic.
I think it's not just me who is in difficulty. Looking around, there are many more seriously ill people. As long as I live, I have hope," he said.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen - Head of the Artificial Kidney Unit, Binh Tan General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang has been treated at the hospital for more than 2 years with a periodic dialysis schedule on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays every week. Currently, the patient's health is relatively stable, but regular dialysis plays a particularly important role for patients with chronic kidney failure, especially in the case of Mr. Quang - who only has one kidney from birth. Maintaining regular dialysis helps filter out toxins, stabilize health and prolong the patient's life.
Currently, patient Quang is entitled to 100% health insurance. However, for expenses outside the health insurance coverage list, the patient still has to spend about more than 3 million VND per month," Dr. Thanh Tuyen added.
The People's Committee of Yen Truong commune, Thanh Hoa province (Yen Trung commune, Yen Dinh district, Thanh Hoa province previously) after reviewing and receiving a request to confirm the difficult circumstances of Mr. Quang's family, the People's Committee of Yen Truong commune has confirmed the family's difficult circumstances, and at the same time supported the family according to the current state policy.
