LD26127: Excellent female student lying motionless after brain incident: "Only hope my child can call out "mother"

An unexpected event struck, causing a well-behaved and studious female student to fall into a series of days fighting a dangerous brain disease.

Perhaps for Ms. Nguyen Thi Hop (born in 1985, Thanh Hoi village, Ung Hoa commune, Hanoi city), one night at the end of August 2024 is the most haunting time in a mother's life.

Previously, her eldest daughter, Nguyen Lan Phuong (born in 2008), was still a diligent student, achieving the title of excellent student for many consecutive years, especially loving Literature.

On the fateful day, during the day, Lan Phuong still lived normally, with no unusual signs. However, at nearly 1 am on August 25, 2024, Lan Phuong suddenly vomited continuously. Just as she called for her parents, Lan Phuong suddenly fell into a state of unconsciousness.

Seeing my child lying motionless, I panicked to the point that my limbs trembled. At that time, I couldn't think of anything but having to save my child at all costs," Ms. Hop shared.

The family quickly called an ambulance to take Lan Phuong to Van Dinh General Hospital. Here, realizing the critical condition, doctors quickly put her on a ventilator and transferred her to Military Hospital 103.

After many tests, doctors diagnosed Lan Phuong with cerebral vascular malformation, widespread cerebral hemorrhage... progressing very quickly and seriously. On the night of August 28, 2024, Lan Phuong had to undergo emergency brain surgery.

The doctor said that if I didn't operate immediately, my child might not survive or the risk of vegetative life is very high. Standing outside the operating room, I prayed and cried, hoping my child would overcome the adversity...", Ms. Hop choked up recalling.

After surgery, Lan Phuong fell into a prolonged coma. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (Military Hospital 103) for treatment for more than two months. That time was a series of extremely heavy days for Ms. Hop's family.

Lan Phuong had to be on a ventilator, eating through a syringe tube. Post-operative complications caused her to have quadriplegia, cerebral hemorrhage, endocarditis, septic shock and continuous high fever. At one point, her body lost weight rapidly, and her health seriously deteriorated.

Every time I look at my child, just open my eyes and look at me, unable to speak, unable to move, my heart tightens. Just hoping my child can say "mother" is enough," Ms. Hop said tearfully.

The treatment cost for Lan Phuong at Military Hospital 103 alone has reached more than 300 million VND. The cost of specialized medicines, hospital beds and arising expenses each day is about more than 1 million VND. After that, Lan Phuong continued to be transferred to the Traditional Medicine Hospital of the Ministry of Public Security for functional rehabilitation, in-depth acupuncture treatment due to severe brain damage and quadriplegia.

By March 2026, Ms. Hop's family had to spend more than 80 million VND on treatment and more than 120 million VND on special medicine. The continuous incurred amounts of money caused Ms. Nguyen Thi Hop's family's life to fall into a deadlock.

Ms. Hop used to farm, doing whatever anyone hired her to do with an income of about 6 million VND per month. Her husband - Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (born in 1983) is also a farmer and freelancer, with erratic income.

The other two children of the family, Nguyen Ngoc Lan (born in 2013) and Nguyen Viet Hung (born in 2015), are both obedient, study well and often help their parents with housework.

Throughout the time Lan Phuong was treated, Ms. Hop and her husband had to take turns taking care of the child. On days when she was off work, she went to the hospital, and on days when Mr. Cuong was not busy, he took the opportunity to go up to take care of the child.

The meager savings quickly ran out. The family had to borrow money from banks, relatives, and relatives to continue to keep hope for their daughter.

Every time I look at my child, I feel sad and worried. I encourage myself not to collapse, to try to take care of my child," Ms. Hop shared.

Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Ngo Si Bien, Head of Thanh Hoi village, Ung Hoa commune, Hanoi City, said that Ms. Hop's family is in difficult circumstances in the locality.

The family is a farmer, with unstable income, but the treatment cost for Lan Phuong is too high. Over the past time, the family has borrowed money from many places to treat her. We really hope that philanthropists will pay attention and join hands to help her have more opportunities to recover," Mr. Bien shared.
