In the confrontation between two teenage tennis players in the world's top 100, Jodar showed bravery at decisive moments to win 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1. The match took place as expected when both continuously created quality balls and wrestled.
The first set witnessed a balanced game with many winner points shared equally. However, Fonseca made a mistake in the tie-break, helping Jodar take the advantage. The Brazilian player then responded strongly in the second set when she soon broke her serve game, bringing the match back to balance.
The turning point came in the decisive set when Jodar quickly took a deep lead. While Fonseca showed signs of losing his composure, the home player maintained stability to close the match, thereby participating in the 4th round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career.
With this result, Jodar became one of the few teenage tennis players who went deep in the clay court tournament in Madrid, along with names like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
In the next round, Jodar will face Vit Kopriva - who advances because opponent Arthur Rinderknech withdrew due to injury. If he continues to win, the 19-year-old player is likely to face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals.
