Vietnamese-American tennis player Learner Tien equals Rafael Nadal's record at the 2025 Australian Open.

Right after the shocking victory over Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Australian Open 2025, Learner Tien continued to surprise with an overwhelming victory 7-6(10), 6-3, 6-3 in the third round against French player Corentin Moutet on the afternoon of January 18 (Vietnam time).

Tien had previously defeated world No. 5 Medvedev in a five-set match on January 16. Just 36 hours later, he was still in good form to overcome Moutet.

The 19-year-old became the youngest man to reach the fourth round in Melbourne since Rafael Nadal in 2005. He is also the second youngest American male to reach the fourth round after Pete Sampras (18).

It is worth noting that this is Tien's debut at the Australian Open. The only Grand Slam he has previously attended was his home country, the US Open, where he was eliminated in the first round in all three seasons.

Therefore, this victory becomes even more meaningful. Sharing after the victory that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes, Tien said:

"It feels great. It's beyond my expectations. I go into every match believing I can win, but this is great. I don't think I can be compared to Nadal right now, but I'm very honored by it."

The 19-year-old will meet Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round, after the Italian defeated Fabian Marozsan 6-7(3), 7-6(8), 6-1, 6-2.

Tien was born and raised in the United States to Vietnamese parents. His parents introduced him to tennis from a young age and he quickly showed an aptitude for the sport.
