In the second round of the Australian Open on January 16, Learner Tien caused a surprise when he defeated Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(10-7).
He is only 19 years old and is considered one of the potential tennis players in the United States. Tien was born in Irvine, California, to Vietnamese parents. He is the first child of Mr. Khuong Dan Tien and Mrs. Huyen Tien, and has a younger sister.
Because Ms. Huyen used to be a math teacher, she named her son Learner. Mr. Khuong is a real estate lawyer, so he named his daughter Justice to honor his profession.
Tien’s parents introduced him to tennis at a young age, helping him develop his skills and passion for the sport. Growing up, Learner practiced on community courts in Irvine under the guidance of his father.
Tien excelled in junior tournaments and was accepted into the United States Tennis Association (USTA) youth development program.
In 2022, Tien earned a spot at the US Open after winning the USTA Boys 18s National Championship. At age 16, he became the youngest men's singles player to compete in the event since Donald Young in 2005. Tien then also earned a spot at the 2023 US Open.
His hard work and determination paid off when he won his first Challenger title in 2024, becoming the youngest American Challenger champion since Frances Tiafoe in 2016.
The Vietnamese-born player also won at M25, reached the quarterfinals of the Chicago Men's Challenger 2024 and extended his winning streak to 28 consecutive wins.
Tien’s success at the 2025 Australian Open, defeating fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, has added to his reputation. He is the youngest player to reach the second round since Pete Sampras in 1990. Tien will next face Corentin Moutet (world No. 68) in the third round. The two have never met before.
