Affirming Vietnam's position
5G technology - the next generation of mobile networks - is becoming a global development trend, bringing fast data transmission speeds, low latency and the ability to connect millions of devices in the same area.
According to the Radio Frequency Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), in Vietnam, frequency licensing for 5G technology must be carried out through auction to ensure publicity, transparency, efficient use of resources and fair competition among businesses.
In 2024, Vietnam will successfully auction the right to use radio frequencies for the 5G band (2500-2600 MHz, 3700-3800 MHz, 3800-3900 MHz) for the first time, marking an important milestone in the process of modernizing telecommunications infrastructure and serving the needs of digital economic development, affirming Vietnam's ability to manage frequencies and its preparation for the digital era.
The Radio Frequency Department believes that this success has many important meanings, demonstrated through many outstanding aspects.
This is the driving force for digital infrastructure development, as the winning businesses are committed to investing heavily in 5G network infrastructure, paving the way for a comprehensive upgrade in the quality of telecommunications services.
This is also an important resource for the national budget, as the proceeds from frequency auctions provide additional resources for investment in socio-economic development. This is evidence of the effective exploitation of national resources, both promoting the efficient use of frequency spectrum and creating sustainable economic value.
"These results not only affirm Vietnam's position in the field of frequency management but also contribute to promoting innovation and development of digital society," the Radio Frequency Department affirmed.
The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has highly appreciated the results of the 5G spectrum auction in Vietnam with the amount of spectrum more than doubled, contributing to accelerating the digital transformation process and promoting Vietnam's economic growth in the coming years.
Keep up with the world in applying the latest technology
Viettel Group - the first enterprise to win the auction - officially launched 5G services nationwide on October 15, 2024 with 6,500 broadcasting stations. This not only meets the increasing demand for connectivity but also creates a solid foundation for national digital transformation, promoting the development of socio-economic sectors.
Major General Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group - said that from being behind, approaching 2G, 3G, 4G technologies that had been popular in the world 8-13 years before, this is also the first time Vietnam can go hand in hand with the world in applying the latest technology of the 4.0 revolution, becoming one of the earliest countries to successfully test. Viettel is the first network operator to test 5G services in 63 provinces/cities.
"By mastering many important core network systems, Viettel has brought Vietnam into the Top 5 first countries to produce 5G network equipment, after Sweden, Finland, China and South Korea" - Major General Tao Duc Thang emphasized.
On December 20, 2024, within the framework of the 2025 Plan Implementation Conference, Vinaphone also officially commercialized 5G in Vietnam.
Mr. Huynh Quang Liem - General Director of VNPT Group - said: "With the advanced 5G infrastructure ready, VNPT welcomes domestic and foreign enterprises and organizations to cooperate to continue expanding and enriching the ecosystem of digital solutions to meet the needs of innovation and digital transformation of agencies, businesses and the community".
