Vietnam Internet accelerates after 5G

NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

The official commercialization of 5G has helped Vietnam jump 8 places to 43rd place in the world in terms of Internet ranking.

On the morning of December 17 in Ho Chi Minh City, the 5G Day event organized by Viettel took place, attracting more than 1,000 partners and businesses, with more than 50 technology booths from large domestic and international units.

With 2 topics "Technology, trend updates" and "Multi-industry 5G applications", guest experts presented 14 papers, sharing in-depth perspectives on the 5G ecosystem, development trends, 5G applications in production, entertainment, digital transformation and participation in urgent social issues, development opportunities for cloud and AI in the 5G era.

Forecasting the development trend of 5G in Vietnam and in the region, Mr. Pham Van Minh, Director of Mobile Solutions at Nokia, commented that 5G deployment is expected to grow strongly in the coming years, with 5G traffic forecast to surpass 4G in 2025, becoming a technology that drives the economy and opens up many new opportunities for businesses.

Mr. Pham Van Minh cited data from Omdia showing that 5G is currently the fastest growing mobile technology and will account for more than half of the total global data volume by 2025. “5G has created new business models through network optimization and providing new services such as network slicing and AI. Businesses need to take advantage of opportunities from the transformation,” Mr. Minh affirmed.

Proving that 5G is growing rapidly globally, Mr. Hoang Hung Hai, Product Director of Qualcomm, said that the number of global mobile connections is increasing rapidly, with 2.1 billion 5G phones sold and more than 300 carriers launching 5G services. “5G technology is expected to contribute nearly 900 billion USD to the global economy by 2030,” Mr. Hoang Hung Hai emphasized.

Mr. Pham Le Chung, Head of Ericsson Cloud Services, also presented impressive figures on the development of 5G. With nearly 350 5G networks, including more than 60 standalone (SA) 5G networks, 5G has covered 55% of the world's population and 5G is accounting for 34% of global mobile traffic, opening up many new opportunities for businesses and users.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Director of Mobile Service Center, Viettel Telecom said that as the first network operator to launch the largest 5G network in Vietnam, Viettel 5G network had 3 million users after only 2 weeks of launch, now reaching approximately 4 million and is expected to increase to 10 million after 1 year.

A survey by the network operator shows that 80% of 5G customers are concentrated in urban areas, industrial zones and tourist areas, while customers in rural areas mainly use 4G. This is also the reason why the network operator decided to prioritize 5G coverage in the center of provinces and cities, and the areas that will use 5G the most.

Viettel's pioneering in launching 5G commercially has contributed greatly to Vietnam's global Internet ranking. Vietnam jumped 8 places to 43rd place after having the first 5G network, with a growth rate of 31% - the strongest increase according to Ookla's assessment.

Statistics from iSpeed - the measurement system of the Ministry of Information and Communications also showed a similar trend in October - the time Viettel launched its 5G network.
