The latest storm and low pressure news in the afternoon of July 21st from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that low pressure 07d in the east of Visayas, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), is highly likely to strengthen into a storm or tropical depression in the next 24 hours. Currently, the latest low pressure is 1.525km east of Visayas.
It is expected that low pressure 07d will enter PAR on the evening of July 21 or morning of July 22. If it strengthens into a storm or tropical depression, PAGASA will name this system Kiyapo.
Previously, low pressure 07d formed from cloud clusters outside PAR. On the morning of July 21, weather forecaster Veronica Torres of PAGASA said that low pressure 07d is likely to develop into a storm or tropical depression, but this possibility is expected to increase in the next 24 hours. At 8 am on July 21, the low pressure was about 1,635km southeast of Luzon.
The low pressure appears in line with PAGASA's long-term forecast announced on July 20 that in the week from July 20-26, the low pressure will form at the eastern boundary of PAGASA's TCAD forecast area, then gradually move northwest, towards northern Luzon.
This low pressure system will continue to exist until the period from July 27 to August 2, with the possibility of entering the East Sea. Throughout its existence, PAGASA forecasts that this system is likely to strengthen into a storm or tropical depression.
PAGASA experts noted that once it enters PAR and gradually gets closer to the Philippines, this system can cause rain in the Philippines. However, the southwest monsoon is still the dominant weather system and affects many areas of the Philippines.
While PAGASA is upgrading the strength of the low pressure near the Philippines, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) of the US Navy still maintains its assessment that the low pressure that this agency named 92W is still unlikely to strengthen into a storm or tropical depression in the next 24 hours. The maximum sustained wind speed of low pressure 92W in the Philippine Sea announced by JTWC is about 25-35 km/h.
JTWC analysis shows that 92W is in a favorable environment for development, with warm sea surface temperatures (29-30 degrees C), low wind shear and good divergence at high altitudes. Forecast models all agree that 92W will continue to move westward.
