Prison riots kill 19 in Sri Lanka

Riots between two groups of inmates escalated into violence, causing many prison staff and security forces to be injured and killed.

On July 6, a total of 19 people were killed in riots that broke out in a prison in Negombo city, western Sri Lanka, while at least 50 others were injured, police said.

According to Xinhua, the injured have been taken to Negombo Hospital. Authorities are taking steps to transfer seriously injured cases to the National Hospital in Colombo, police said. The initial riots occurred at around 1 pm on July 6 (local time) when two groups of prisoners clashed with each other. The situation was controlled but violence broke out again.

Among the dead and injured were prison staff and security forces.
