The latest storm news on the morning of March 11th from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that a tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has strengthened into a tropical storm. The latest storm has the international name Nuri.
PAGASA said that Typhoon Nuri has strengthened into a tropical storm at 2 am on March 11, Philippines time. The typhoon is currently 290km east of the Eastern Visayas region, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h. The latest typhoon near the Philippines is moving slowly southwest.
Expert Nathaniel Servando - head of PAGASA - affirmed that Typhoon Nuri is unlikely to enter PAR and will not directly affect weather conditions in the Philippines.
However, the low pressure trough or extension of Typhoon Nuri has affected the Dinagat, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental archipelagoes. These areas are forecast to have scattered rain and thunderstorms.
PAGASA weather forecasters warn that flash floods or landslides caused by moderate to heavy rain may occur in these areas.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will affect Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela and Aurora. Here, it will be cloudy with light rain in the next 24 hours, the forecast bulletin stated.
A similar weather system is likely to affect Metro Manila, the remaining areas of Luzon and Visayas are cloudy, with scattered light rain.
Meanwhile, the remaining areas of Mindanao are expected to be cloudy, with scattered showers or thunderstorms due to the impact of localized thunderstorms.
