Malaysian authorities seized nearly 1.2 tons of drugs hidden in tea bags of a shipment from Myanmar and 6 suspects were arrested.

Reuters reported on May 28 that a total of 1,187 kg of crystal meth, worth 71 million ringgit ($18 million), was transported in a container from Yangon, Myanmar to Klang port, just outside Kuala Lumpur.

For us, this is the largest seizure in history in terms of volume and value, Reuters quoted General Director of Subromaniam Tholary Customs General Department as saying.

The shipment was seized on May 22, claimed to be food and was related to a Malaysian trading company headquartered in the suburbs of the capital Kuala Lumpur, Subromaniam added.

Three Myanmar citizens and three Malaysians were arrested during the seizure.

Subromaniam said the case is still under investigation and is suspected of involvement with organizations in Myanmar. In addition to nearly 1.2 tons of crystal meth, Malaysian officials also seized a small amount of heroin and about 1 million packs of smuggled cigarettes.
