Iran's Biggest Attack on Israel

Thanh Hà |

On the morning of October 2, Iran announced that the missile attack on Israel on the night of October 1 had ended unless there were further provocations against the country.

"Our actions are over unless Israel decides to retaliate further. In this scenario, our response will be stronger and more decisive," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed.

Any Israeli response would be met with "massive destruction" targeting Israeli infrastructure, Iran's Armed Forces General Staff said.

According to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iranian forces used the Fattah supersonic missile for the first time in the attack on the night of October 1 and 90% of the missiles launched by the country hit targets in Israel.

According to Iran's state news agency, three Israeli military bases were targeted. Tehran stressed that the attack on the night of October 1 was in response to Israel's killing of military leaders and attacks in Lebanon and Gaza.

Iran's attack on the night of October 1 marked the largest military attack on Israel to date, with about 180 missiles launched at Israel, Reuters pointed out. Sirens blared across Israel and explosions shook Jerusalem and the Jordan River Valley as residents were told to move into bomb shelters.

No casualties were reported in Israel following the latest Iranian attack but one man was killed in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Israel activated its air defenses against the Iranian attack and most of the missiles were intercepted by "Israel and the US-led defense coalition," Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

"Iran's attack is a serious and dangerous escalation," he added. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to respond. "Iran made a big mistake tonight and they will pay the price," he said late on Tuesday.

It is known that US Navy warships fired about 10 interceptor missiles at Iranian missiles aimed at Israel.
After Iran's attack with 180 ballistic missiles on Israel on the night of October 1, Israel and the US pledged to retaliate against Iran. The US affirmed that it would cooperate with its long-time ally Israel to ensure that Iran faces "serious consequences" after this attack.

Concerns that Iran and the United States are being drawn into a regional war have increased in the past two weeks as Israeli attacks on Lebanon have intensified, Reuters reported, with Israel launching a ground operation in Lebanon this week amid a year-long conflict in the Gaza Strip. On the morning of October 2, Israel continued to bomb the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon - a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on the Middle East on October 2, while the European Union has called for an immediate ceasefire. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Iran's attack on Israel, calling it "escalation after escalation". "This has to stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire," he stressed.
