President Yoon Suk Yeol released

The South Korean court issued an order to release President Yoon Suk Yeol on March 7.

Yonhap reported that President Yoon Suk Yeol was released on March 7 after the Seoul Central District Court accepted a request to cancel his arrest warrant related to martial law.

President Yoon Suk Yeol filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court last month, arguing that the indictment against him for martial law was unlicensed.

President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested in January 2025 in connection with the martial law declaration on December 3, 2024.

Investigators have accused the president's martial law of significing a rebellion. If found guilty of rebellion, President Yoon Suk Yeol would face the death penalty or life in prison.

President Yoon Suk Yeol was also impeached by lawmakers in December 2024 and allowed the Constitutional Court to decide whether to remove him from office or reinstate him.

If the Constitutional Court holds the impeachment verdict, President Yoon Suk Yeol will be formally removed from office and South Korea will hold a national election to select his successor within two months.
