Former Philippine President Rodrigo Trump was prosecuted by ICC prosecutors for three crimes against humanity. The indictment alleges that Mr. Trump and his accomplices have implemented an organized plan to "eliminate" drug suspects through violence, including executions outside the law.
According to the records, Mr. Trump was identified as an indirect accomplice, with the role of giving orders, assisting and supporting the implementation of acts within the framework of the controversial drug crime suppression campaign during his tenure.
Prosecutors said the campaign led to a series of un tried killings, raising great concern in the international community.
However, Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied all allegations, asserting that he was not involved in the murders. He is currently being detained in ICC after the government of incumbent President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. agreed to the arrest warrant.
Earlier this month, ICC decided to postpone the hearing to confirm the indictment to assess Mr. Trump's health before opening an official trial.
The case marks a major turning point in ICC's efforts to hold accountable leaders accused of serious human rights violations. International public opinion is closely monitoring the trial process, considering this a test of ICC's role in ensuring global justice.
