Transitional World Economic Forum

Ngạc Ngư |

This year, the 58th World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos is held, taking place in a much more special context than previous times.

The conflict in Ukraine continues despite all advances and delays in diplomatic negotiations to find a peaceful political solution to quickly end the conflict.

In the United States, President Donald Trump returned to power and immediately stirred up the world with domestic and foreign policies and actions. He launched a trade protection tariff war with almost all US trade and economic partners, using US trade protection tariffs and military action as tools and weapons to serve ruling intentions, especially in foreign affairs. The situation of relations between major partners such as the US, Russia, China and the EU is volatile rather than unstable, especially between the US and the EU, with NATO and former US allies and strategic partners.

Artificial intelligence has begun to conquer the whole world. WEF Davos this year has an unprecedented large-scale participation of the United States. This year's theme is "The Spirit of Dialogue" but in reality, dialogue is less and monologues are more, discussions between many parties do not have the resonance of sideline activities, private agreements between a few partners.

WEF Davos this year is significantly dominated by Mr. Trump's own activities. Mr. Trump takes advantage of the forum to praise his current administration's results and praise the United States, to affirm his determination to win Greenland, to show that the US is ready to abandon NATO and continue to disregard the EU.

On the sidelines of WEF Davos this year, Mr. Trump launched the Peace Council for the Gaza Strip and forced NATO to sign an agreement with the US on Greenland Island. The agreement does not help the US obtain this island but has given the US the right to strengthen its direct military presence and access to and use of abundant natural resources on the island. It makes Mr. Trump believe that the US only needs to move forward, only need to impose trade protection tariffs and threaten to be ready for military action, then NATO, EU and Denmark will all have to compromise.

WEF Davos this year shows that this major forum has begun to change both in terms of organization and nature. It shifts from a network of global meetings and exchanges to separate gatherings, shifting from a forum where participants express their vision for the present and future of the world to a place where stakeholders handle current crises, less general and far-reaching but more specific and practical.

This year's forum also shows that the process of unlimited globalization continues to slow down, giving way to the formation of alliances, gatherings, linkages... new strategies in various aspects to respond to changes in geopolitics, world security politics and international relations, to limit being affected by negative impacts and consequences as well as to maximize their own benefits from those changes. At WEF Davos this year, it is very clear how the world order based on rules is challenged and fiercely opposed by the geopolitical reality of the world.

Even though the traditional tradition of the annual WEF Davos is only noisy in the world media during the days of the event and then quickly forgotten, this year's WEF Davos leaves a special mark when it signals that WEF Davos from here will be more practical and specific in terms of content as well as results, and will become a world political arena between many parties.
