The latest storm and low pressure forecast from the Philippine weather agency PAGASA said that from October 30 to November 5, a new low pressure is expected to form in the TCID forecast area of the Philippines.
This low pressure near the Philippines is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm at low to moderate level. However, the new low pressure right after Typhoon Kong-rey is unlikely to enter the Philippine PAR forecast area.
Therefore, there is a general possibility of a new tropical storm during this forecast period.
Philippine weather forecasters say that the new low pressure area likely to strengthen into a storm after Kong-rey (local name is Leon) may continue to last until November 6-12. However, during this period, the system is likely to reduce the chance of strengthening into a typhoon and will turn towards Japan.
According to the latest storm news at 5:00 a.m. on November 1, Kong-rey has weakened into a strong tropical storm and left the Philippine PAR forecast area, heading towards the East China Sea. Typhoon Kong-rey is forecast to continue weakening for the remainder of the forecast period due to unfavorable environmental conditions.
Similarly, the latest update on Typhoon Kong-rey from the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said that the storm is located 1,280 km southwest of Sasebo, Japan and has been moving north at a speed of 22 km/h over the past 6 hours. Kong-rey is forecast to begin moving northwest. As it moves closer to land, cooler sea surface temperatures and increased wind shear will cause the storm to continue weakening into a tropical depression.
Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan (China) on October 31, killing two people, causing strong winds and flooding across much of the island's east coast and northern areas, after sliding across the northern Philippines. In Taiwan (China), due to the impact of Typhoon Kong-rey, at least 2 people died due to fallen trees and power poles and 205 people were injured.
Japan's weather officials are urging Okinawa residents to be alert for high waves as Typhoon Kong-rey heads toward the country, NHK reported. The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that Japan's Typhoon No. 21 will weaken into a low pressure area and move eastward, potentially causing heavy rain in western Japan from November 1-2 and eastern Japan from November 2-3. Winds are picking up and waves are getting higher in the Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, near the storm.
An estimated two to eight tropical storms are expected to enter the Philippine PAR forecast area from July to December. With Typhoon Trami (local name Kristine) and Typhoon Kong-rey already the first two tropical storms to enter the PAR in October, PAGASA is forecasting a maximum of six more typhoons to form near the Philippines before the end of the 2024 typhoon season. Philippine typhoon forecasters note that typhoons in the last quarter of 2024 are expected to be stronger and more likely to hit the Philippine mainland.
