Dak Lak - The provincial Department of Education and Training directed Phan Dang Luu High School to verify parents' feedback about students paying for martial arts classes to achieve physical education.

On July 11, Mr. Le Van Tho - Principal of Phan Dang Luu High School (Pong Drang Commune, Dak Lak Province) - confirmed that the provincial Department of Education and Training had directed the school to verify the petition reflecting the parents.

Previously, Ms. D.T.Y (who has a child studying at school) submitted a petition to the authorities to verify and handle the case of two physical education teachers of the school organizing extra classes in martial arts with many socks, causing frustration for many parents.

Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Ms. Y said that the two teachers organized extra classes in martial arts right in the school with a fee of 2 million VND/student/year (not including money for purchases). Notably, if any student registers to study martial arts, they will be given priority for assessment of their physical education completion and vice versa.

Many families have many children and are poor, so having to pay extra for martial arts will put them in a difficult situation.

Some parents whose children are studying at the above school are also upset about the organization of extra classes in martial arts. They said that this has existed for many years. However, no one dared to speak up for fear of affecting their children.

"I have 2 children who all study at Phan Dang Luu High School, so I know this very well. A child has graduated and registered to study martial arts for 3 years but does not know any martial arts because he does not need to study, but the purpose of making physical education is to be considered successful," another parent added.

Mr. Le Van Tho - Principal of Phan Dang Luu High School - confirmed that there are 2 physical education teachers who organize extra classes in martial arts in the schoolyard, outside of office hours. Teaching martial arts and collecting money is done by teachers who agree with the students, the school does not direct or benefit from it.

After the reflection, the school will no longer be allowed to teach martial arts in school to avoid fighting. According to regulations, if students have good grades in subjects but do not achieve good physical education, they will be reduced to 1 level.

According to Mr. Tho, after receiving the application, the school invited the students to come, but because it was summer vacation, only about 10 students were there. As for the class, if parents complain, none of them will be promoted. The school has prepared ballots and quoted Ms. Y's reflections to ask them, some of them hit the "ye" box, some of them hit the "no" box.

"The content of Ms. Y's complaint has many untrue issues. The school is continuing to verify, and it is expected that the results will be available this Sunday," Mr. Tho added.

On June 19, the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee sent a petition and reflection from Ms. D.T.Y to the Department of Education and Training.

Accordingly, on June 13, the Provincial People's Committee received a petition from Ms. Y reflecting that 2 teachers at Phan Dang Luu High School organized extra classes in martial arts at the school and collected money that was not in accordance with regulations. The Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee forwarded the petition to the Department of Education and Training for inspection, settlement according to regulations and notification of the results to the Provincial People's Committee.

As of July 9, the school has not yet received instructions and the Department of Education and Training has not yet established a team to verify.
