Newsweek's latest hurricane report says a potential new storm is near the site of Nadine's formation. Nadine formed slowly, then passed through Belize, moved into Central America and Mexico, and disbanded. But the remnants of Nadine have resurgent in the Pacific Ocean and become a Category 5 super typhoon Kristy.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has more than a month left and the next storm on the list of named storms for the season is Patty. The most recent storm before Patty was Hurricane Oscar, which hit Cuba last week.
If the Caribbean system becomes Hurricane Patty, it is likely to form between October 30 and November 2, according to AccuWeather's updated hurricane forecast.
AccuWeather's Alex DaSilva, a leading hurricane forecaster, said the latest storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is unlikely to impact western states of Alabama, but atmospheric conditions could favor the storm's path to Florida.
Caribbean sea temperatures remain above average and low wind shear will create favorable conditions for the storm to strengthen. Meanwhile, storms that form in the region in late October typically move westward across Central America, like Nadine, or eastward toward Cuba.
DaSilva does not expect the upcoming new storm to follow a Nadine path, but says the main area of impact could be Florida.
"It's certainly possible. There have been storms in November that have been pulled north toward the Florida peninsula," he said.
AccuWeather experts say the storm is more likely to impact southern Florida than Florida's Big Bend.
If Patty heads toward Florida, it will be the latest storm to hit the state that has seen two consecutive major storms, Helene in late September and Milton in early October. Depending on atmospheric conditions, the storm could impact the entire state of Carolina.
DaSilva warned that weather conditions are extremely favorable for the development of the new storm.
Despite concerns from other meteorologists, the official hurricane and depression forecast from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) shows that there is no possibility of a storm or tropical depression in the Atlantic Ocean in the next 7 days.
According to the Washington Post, the US will see five major hurricanes, Beryl, Debby, Francine, Helene and Milton, in the 2024 hurricane season. Of these, four major hurricanes hit Florida. To date, this is the third costliest hurricane season in U.S. history. Hurricane Helene became the deadliest storm to hit the US mainland since Hurricane Katrina. More than 200 people have died as a result of Helene.
