On February 5, Hong Kong residents woke up to cold weather as temperatures dropped to 12 degrees in the urban area and even lower in the New Territories due to the influence of a strong northeast monsoon.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory (China) HKO, the temperature in Kowloon City and Kwun Tong district dropped to 10.9 degrees Celsius at around 5:30 a.m., while Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong (China), recorded the lowest temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius at 3:47 a.m.; Ngong Ping plateau in Lantau dropped to 5.9 degrees Celsius at 5:46 a.m.
Another strong northeast monsoon is expected to hit Hong Kong (China) this weekend, according to the HKO weather forecast.
"Hong Kong (China) will be cold on the weekend morning, with the minimum temperature around 11 degrees Celsius in urban areas, even a few degrees lower in the New Territories," HKO said.
The Center for Health Protection recommends that people, especially the elderly and those with chronic diseases, take health protection measures in cold weather, as low temperatures can aggravate some diseases.
At the same time, a strong cold front swept through Taiwan (China), causing snowfall on the North Yushan peak at noon on February 4. The snow lasted for more than an hour and was about 1 cm thick.
The CWA said the temperature on Yushan Peak dropped to minus 4.2 degrees Celsius at 7:30 a.m., the lowest recorded in all of Taiwan. Snow began falling at noon, blanketing the entire area in white. Hail also fell near the Paiyun rest stop, making the trail slippery and dangerous.
Yushan Meteorological Station recorded heavy snow and ice on the trees. Due to the harsh weather conditions, the Yushan National Park Administration warned those intending to conquer Yushan to carefully assess the risks before climbing.
CWA weather analyst Wu Sheng-yu noted that a new cold front will hit Taiwan on February 7, potentially bringing temperatures down to freezing levels by the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that around early morning and early morning of February 7, a strong cold air mass will affect the Northeast region, then affect the Northwest region, North Central region, Central Central region and some places in the South Central region.
In the North, from the afternoon of February 7, the weather will turn cold and very cold; from the night of February 7, the weather will turn cold in the North Central region, from Quang Binh to Hue, the weather will turn cold and very cold in some places. The lowest temperature in this cold air mass in the North will generally be 9-12 degrees Celsius, in mountainous areas 5-8 degrees Celsius, in high mountainous areas below 2 degrees Celsius in some places; in the North Central region, it will be 11-14 degrees Celsius, in the area from Quang Binh to Hue, it will be 14-16 degrees Celsius.
Hanoi area: From the afternoon of February 7, the weather will turn cold, with some places experiencing severe cold. The lowest temperature in this cold air mass is commonly 10-12 degrees.
The widespread cold spell in the North and North Central provinces is likely to last until around February 10.
