The latest storm forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on January 27 said that during the week from January 27 to February 2, there is no possibility of any low pressure appearing within PAGASA's PMD forecast area.
However, Philippine typhoon forecasters warn that a new low pressure system is expected to form southeast of the Philippines during the week of February 3 to 9.
The first depression of 2025 near the Philippines is expected to form in the southeastern part of PAGASA's TCAD and PAR forecast regions.
The low pressure system near the Philippines is forecast to move closer to the east of Mindanao and the Visayas. Forecasters say it has the potential to become the first typhoon of 2025 during the week of February 3 to 9, with a low to moderate chance of becoming a typhoon.
Previously, PAGASA’s storm and low pressure information on January 24 stated that during the week from January 31 to February 6, a new low pressure is likely to develop in the southern boundary of PAGASA’s PAR forecast area. At that time, PAGASA’s storm forecasters said that the first low pressure of 2025 near the Philippines is likely to move closer to the east of Mindanao and Visayas. However, the possibility of the new low pressure near the Philippines becoming a storm is quite low.
If the new depression strengthens into a storm and enters the Philippine PAR forecast area, the storm will be named Auring, becoming the first storm of the 2025 typhoon season.
