"We have signed trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand," Minister Lutnick shared on the evening of July 30 in an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News. He did not provide further information about the content of the agreement reached.
Thailand and Cambodia both face a 36% tax rate starting from August 1 for goods exported to the US.
Thailand's Commerce Ministry spokeswoman Poonpong Naiyanapakorn said that Thailand hopes for a final tax rate of around 18% to 20%, equivalent to neighboring countries in the region.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, who is leading trade talks with the US, said he was not aware of the deal.
US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick's speech was released two days before the deadline set by President Donald Trump for US trade partners to reach a deal.
The announcement of a trade deal with Cambodia and Thailand was also announced hours after the US announced it had reached a deal with South Korea. Accordingly, Korean goods imported into the US will be subject to a 15% tax.
