The European Commission is developing a plan to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the European Union (EU). This plan may allow Kiev to enjoy partial membership status before completing all mandatory reforms.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pushed for the goal of bringing the country to join the EU as early as 2027. This will be the content of the peace agreement that this country signed with Russia.
Mr. Orbán resolutely opposes Ukraine's accession to the EU. According to European diplomats and officials, the European Commission and many EU members are seeking to avoid Budapest's veto power, including proposing that US President Donald Trump put pressure on Mr. Orbán, or even cite Article 7 of the EU Treaty to strip Hungary of voting rights.
In a post on social network X on February 11, the Hungarian Prime Minister warned that this move would be "a public declaration of war against Hungary.
They have decided to admit Ukraine to the coalition as early as 2027. They ignore the decision of the Hungarian people and are determined to eliminate the Hungarian government by all means necessary," he wrote.
The Hungarian leader has repeatedly disagreed with Mr. Zelensky and has included the issue of Ukraine joining the EU in the election campaign, describing Kiev and Brussels as threats to Budapest's independence.
