Germany recorded the second highest summer temperature in history, with nearly 15,800 deaths related to heat.

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) on August 31 (local time) said that summer 2026 is the second hottest summer ever recorded in Germany, with an average temperature nationwide reaching 19.6 degrees Celsius.

According to initial calculations by DWD, this summer is only behind 2003 - when the average temperature reached 19.7 degrees Celsius.

On June 27, Germany recorded the highest temporary temperature of the year, reaching 41.8 degrees Celsius in Moeckern - Drewitz, Sachsen - Anhalt state, eastern Germany.

Not only hot weather, this summer is also particularly dry. Total rainfall in Germany is only about 171mm, equivalent to less than 72% of the normal average.

In addition, Germany also recorded about 779 hours of sunshine in the summer, belonging to the group of years with the highest number of sunshine hours since the country started counting sunshine hours in 1951.

Extreme heat also causes serious consequences for public health. According to estimates by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) - Germany's leading public health agency, by mid-August this year, the country had recorded nearly 15,800 deaths related to heat.
