On July 12 (Moscow time), according to TASS, Russian officials said that the Moscow region had suffered one of the largest unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) attacks in many years, when nearly 300 UAVs were detected heading towards the capital and surrounding areas in just 24 hours.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that most of the UAVs were detected and intercepted by Russian air defense systems from a distance before approaching the area.
According to Mr. Sobyanin, 45 UAVs were shot down by air defense forces while approaching Moscow.
He did not specify where these UAVs originated from, but affirmed that the air defense system has worked effectively to protect the capital.
According to statistics from TASS news agency, based on information released by Mr. Sobyanin, this is one of the largest-scale UAV attacks on Moscow in recent years.
In the past time, Russia has continuously recorded many UAV attacks targeting Moscow as well as border areas.
Russian officials believe that air defense systems have been significantly strengthened to deal with drone attacks, especially after the number of attacks increased.
Moscow is one of the frequent targets protected by many layers of air defense, including modern missile complexes deployed in suburban areas and strategic locations.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it has successfully intercepted most of the UAVs before they damaged ground targets.
There is currently no official information about damage to infrastructure or casualties related to the latest attack.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to witness both sides increasing the use of UAVs to attack military and infrastructure targets of the enemy, making this type of equipment increasingly important on the battlefield.
