On July 7 (Moscow time), according to Xinhua, the Russian capital Moscow suffered the largest drone (UAV) attack in the past 2 years, when more than 430 UAVs were launched into the Moscow area in just one night.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that from the evening before until 6 am (local time), Russian air defense forces continuously intercepted UAVs flying towards the capital area.
From evening to 6 am, more than 430 UAVs flew towards the Moscow area. Most were destroyed by air defense forces from a distance. 36 enemy UAVs were shot down while approaching Moscow," Mr. Sobyanin informed.
According to Russian officials, air defense systems have been deployed in many directions to intercept UAVs before they penetrate deep into the central area.
This is considered the largest UAV attack targeting Moscow since 2024.
Previously, on July 4, the Moscow region also suffered a large-scale attack with more than 200 UAVs launched. However, this number is less than half of the latest raid.
According to Xinhua, as of now, there have been no reports of casualties or serious damage in the Russian capital.
Functional agencies are still continuing to inspect the scene and assess the impact of the incident.
In recent months, UAV attacks targeting Russian territory have been taking place with increasing frequency, while Moscow has continuously strengthened air defense measures to protect the capital area as well as important infrastructure.
Russia's interception of most UAVs from a long distance shows that this country continues to maintain a multi-layered air defense network to minimize the risk of unmanned devices approaching the central area.
The latest attack took place in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict continuing to escalate and all parties increasing the use of UAVs in combat operations as well as attacking targets behind the battle lines.
