CBS News' famous investigative program, 60 Minutes, has just released a new report stating that the US government has obtained a type of guided energy weapon from a criminal network in Russia and believes that this device has been tested on animals.
According to the program's investigation team, this weapon may be one of the answers to some cases related to the "Havana Syndrome" - a mysterious phenomenon that has caused many US diplomats and security personnel to have serious neurological problems in recent years.
The research team tracked traces of a directional energy device believed to be capable of causing biological impacts such as neurological imbalance or mild brain damage without leaving clear signs.
The program said that this device was acquired from a Russian criminal network and then studied to assess its ability to cause symptoms similar to the "Havana Syndrome" cases.
The investigation team believes that the existence of this weapon may help explain some of the cases in hundreds of reports of mysterious symptoms that US diplomats have encountered.
65 people believe they were attacked
According to a "60 Minutes" report, 65 victims believe they were targeted by a directional energy device.
The symptoms they describe are quite similar, including cognitive decline, visual disturbances, loss of balance, severe headache, nausea and vomiting.
Some cases also have prolonged hearing and memory problems.
Notably, many of these are senior US government officials, who have worked abroad or at diplomatic facilities.
Strange sounds before getting sick
One of the prominent witnesses is Mark Lenzi, a security officer of the US State Department who used to work at the US consulate in Guangzhou, China.
Mark Lenzi said he had heard a strange sound that he described as "a ball rolling around in a metal funnel". This sound repeated many times at the same location in the family's apartment, right above his son's crib.
Not long after that, Mark Lenzi said that the whole family began to show pathological symptoms.
A neighbor of his, Catherine Werner, also recounted that she woke up with a strong pressure sensation on both temples, accompanied by a low whistling sound before vomiting and having nosebleeds.
Contact with Russian intelligence?
In the investigative report, program producers said they believe that energy-oriented weapons capable of causing such effects actually exist.
The investigation team also believes that some cases may be related to the activities of Russian intelligence agencies, although these allegations are still being further considered.
Havana syndrome" was first recorded in 2016 when US diplomats in Havana, Cuba reported abnormal health symptoms.
Since then, a series of similar incidents have been recorded in many other countries, causing US security agencies to open many large-scale investigations.
However, to date, US officials have not yet made a final conclusion on the cause of this phenomenon.
