Iran agrees to open temporary maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran said it has reached a preliminary agreement with Oman on opening a temporary maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, which can operate for 2-4 months.

On August 5 (Tehéran time), according to TASS news agency, Iran agreed to open a temporary maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz under an agreement with Oman. This route is expected to operate for 2 to 4 months and may be extended if negotiations achieve positive results.

The above information was released by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and published by IRNA news agency.

According to Mr. Gharibabadi, the new maritime route is currently being jointly deployed by Iran and Oman, initially identified as a temporary solution to maintain traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

This is a temporary route expected to operate for 2-4 months. However, in the current negotiations with Oman, the two sides are also considering the possibility of extending the application time of this route," he said.

Iranian diplomats said the decision to open a temporary maritime route stemmed from uncertain factors in the regional situation.

According to him, Tehran cannot yet predict the security conditions in the coming time as well as whether the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will return to stability or not. Therefore, maintaining an alternative traffic route is considered a necessary option to ensure maritime operations for ships and boats.

Previously, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also confirmed that Iran and Oman had agreed on the geographical coordinates of the new route through the Strait of Hormuz.

He said the two countries may soon announce a joint statement on the content of the agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean, and is also one of the world's most important oil transit points. Every day, a large amount of crude oil and liquefied natural gas from Gulf countries is transported through this area.

Any fluctuations in the Strait of Hormuz could directly affect the global energy market as well as international maritime transport activities.
