Iran opens fire on container ship in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran fired at a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on April 22, causing the ship to be damaged.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, a surveillance agency run by the British military, was the first unit to report the attack at 7:55 am on April 22.

The center said that a warship of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards did not contact the ship before the shooting. No one was injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, Iran's Nour News news agency said that the Revolutionary Guards only fired at the ship after the ship "ignored the warnings of the Iranian armed forces".

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency described the attack as Iran "executing its legitimate control over the Strait of Hormuz".

The attack on the morning of April 22 by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps took place after President Donald Trump announced that the US would extend the ceasefire agreement with Iran indefinitely, which was scheduled to expire on April 22, so that Tehran would have time to make a "unified proposal" before possible negotiations.

Iran has not made any official recognition of Mr. Trump's extension of the ceasefire agreement.

Mr. Trump said that the US will continue to blockade Iranian ports. Iran called the US blockade "unacceptable" and pointed out that this is the reason it has not agreed to participate in negotiations in Islamabad (Pakistan).

Pakistan has made unremitting efforts to bring both the US and Iran closer together for the second round of talks this week.

However, so far, Iran has not pledged to participate. However, Pakistani officials believe Tehran will send a delegation to resume negotiations. The first round of negotiations on April 11 and 12 ended without reaching an agreement. Issues that disrupted this round of negotiations include Iran's uranium enrichment program, its authorized forces in the region and the Strait of Hormuz.

Last weekend, Tehran said it had received new proposals from Washington but also noted that the gap between the two sides is still very large.

The container ship attack occurred in the Strait of Hormuz on April 22 after the US shot and arrested an Iranian container ship as well as boarded a oil tanker related to Iran's oil trading activities in the Indian Ocean.

There is currently no detailed information about the extent of damage to the container ship shot down in the Strait of Hormuz on the morning of April 22.
