Iran says new situation is forming in the Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Parliament Speaker said that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is changing, in the context of increasing maritime tensions between Iran and the US.

On May 5, Anadolu news agency reported that Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared a "new front" is forming in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on social network X, Mr. Ghalibaf said that maritime security and energy transportation through the Strait of Hormuz have been affected by the US and its allies. According to him, the reason comes from the fact that the parties violated the ceasefire and imposed a blockade in this area.

The phrase "new front" was used by Mr. Ghalibaf to describe the changing situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Accordingly, Iran believes that the region is no longer just a military hotspot between Tehran and Washington, but has become a place interwoven with many factors: naval blockade, maritime security, oil transportation and pressure on global energy supplies.

The Iranian Parliament Speaker also said that maintaining the current status quo would put pressure on the US. However, Anadolu news agency did not immediately respond from Washington to this statement.

The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. This is one of the most important oil transport routes in the world. Therefore, any disruption in this area could affect trade, energy transportation and international oil prices.

According to Anadolu, regional tensions escalated after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran then responded against Israel as well as some of the US allies in the Gulf region. Tensions continued to escalate as Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about the risk of energy transport disruption.

A ceasefire took effect from April 8 through the intermediary role of Pakistan. However, negotiations in Islamabad did not reach a long-term agreement. Afterwards, US President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire but did not give a specific deadline.

From April 13, the US began to implement naval blockades targeting Iran's maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz. The confrontation between the US and Iran around this maritime route is causing the ceasefire in the Middle East to face many instabilities.

There are currently no signs that the parties have reached a long-term stable mechanism to deal with tensions in the region. While Iran believes that the US and its allies are increasing maritime risks, Washington continues to maintain military operations to control the situation in this strategic strait.
