Iran and Iraq have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation, aiming to promote economic development, strengthen security and stability in the region.

According to Xinhua News Agency, citing information from the Iranian State Radio Corporation (IRNA), on July 23 (local time), Iran and Iraq signed an agreement and 3 memorandums of understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral relations and strengthen regional security.

The documents were signed in Tehran (Iran) in the presence of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.

The agreement between the two sides relates to road freight transport. In addition, the 3 memorandums of understanding also focused on areas including the construction of a railway line connecting Iran and Iraq, establishing sister relations between the two capitals, strengthening cooperation in public administration management, education and human resource development.

In the talks after the signing ceremony, President Pezeshkian and Prime Minister al-Zaidi emphasized that promoting bilateral relations will contribute to strengthening stability, security and welfare for the people of the two countries, while strengthening cohesion in the West Asian region.

According to a statement from the Iranian Presidential Office, the two leaders affirmed that preserving and promoting history, culture, and religion between Iran and Iraq is the foundation for expanding strategic cooperation.

The two sides also called for accelerating the implementation of previously signed agreements, while effectively exploiting the potential for cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, trade, transportation and energy.

For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi affirmed that Iraq will not let any threats against Iran originate from its territory.

President Pezeshkian emphasized that the two countries still have many opportunities for joint investment, and said that a safe and stable environment will create favorable conditions for the development of bilateral relations.

The two sides also discussed establishing an operating mechanism for the Iran-Iraq Joint Economic Committee.

Leading the high-level delegation, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi arrived in Iran on July 23 at the invitation of President Masoud Pezeshkian. This is his second foreign trip since taking office in May, after a visit to Washington (USA) in early July.
