Israeli Defense Minister Katz said on March 17 that he had just been informed of the death of a senior Iranian security official after Israeli attacks on the night of March 16.
Mr. Ali Larijani is an influential secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).
He was appointed by President Masoud Pezeshkian in August 2025 as secretary of the SNSC and representative of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to the council. He was also described by Iranian media as an advisor to the late Supreme Leader.
He served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament for 12 years, from May 2008 to May 2020.
Before becoming Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Larijani was the head of Iran's nuclear negotiating delegation from 2005 to 2007.
His brother - Mr. Sadegh Larijani - is also an influential figure in the Islamic Republic of Iran. He heads the Parliamentary Interest Council, an agency that plays the role of the final arbitrator between the Parliament and the constitutional supervisory body, the Guardian Council.
On March 17, in addition to the death of Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Gholamreza Soleimani - Commander of Iran's Basij unit - was also killed. He has been the head of the militia forces linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard for the past 6 years.
