Pentagon refutes information that US Secretary of War is running for president

The US Secretary of War is said to have discussed with close associates about the possibility of running for president in 2028, but the Pentagon denied this information.

On August 28 (local time), according to TASS news agency quoting sources familiar with the matter, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth is said to have discussed with close associates about the possibility of running for president in the 2028 election.

According to sources, Mr. Hegseth and his wife, Mrs. Jennifer, have been considering this idea for the past few months.

However, Mr. Sean Parnell, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, denied the above information.

Secretary Hegseth is not running for president and his top priority is to lead the Department of War. All other speculations are unfounded," Mr. Parnell declared.

Mr. Hegseth is one of the prominent figures in the administration of US President Donald Trump. The fact that he is said to intend to run for president, if confirmed, may put him in the group of early figures to be noticed in the Republican nomination race.

The US presidential election in 2028 is still more than 2 years away. However, discussions about who is likely to succeed Mr. Trump have begun to emerge within the Republican Party.

Previously, US media reported that President Trump had privately told Republican donors that he wanted Vice President JD Vance to become the party's candidate in the 2028 presidential election.

Mr. JD Vance is currently one of the notable figures in US politics and is considered a potential candidate for the race to succeed Mr. Trump.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hegseth has not publicly announced his intention to run. The US Department of War continues to affirm that he is focusing on his current work and calls the information about the campaign plan unfounded.
