This series of events quickly ignited a wave of speculation and panic on US social networks.
According to the New York Post, the Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, also known as the "Death Star" or "Flying Pentagon", was seen moving to Camp Spring, Maryland - just about 25 minutes drive from the White House.
Notably, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was on the plane when it landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on the evening of January 8. Also on the flight was right-wing activist Laura Loomer, further causing public uproar.
The rare appearance of the E-4B immediately became the focus of conspiracy theories. On social networks, many people believe that Washington is "preparing for the worst-case scenario".
Internet-influenced Mario Nawfal wrote: "This is actually a flight command center, designed to maintain the operation of the US government in the worst situation, even when ground systems are attacked. There is no official reason to be announced, but every time this plane appears, rumors always explode very quickly.
Suspicious coincidence between hotspots
The discovery of the "end-of-life plane" takes place in a particularly sensitive context. The US has just arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, while President Donald Trump's administration is also closely monitoring protests in Iran and publicly warning Tehran not to suppress protesters.
These tense geopolitical developments make many people believe that activating the E-4B is not simply a normal flight.
A post on social networks also affirmed that this may be "the first time in 51 years of operation" that the Boeing 747 E-4B Nightwatch has appeared publicly at LAX, and called it "the biggest aviation highlight of 2026".
What is special about the E-4B Nightwatch?
The E-4B Nightwatch is a Boeing 747 version deeply modified by the US Air Force, serving the National Airborne Operations Command (NAOC) mission. Unlike Air Force One - mainly serving the President during tours, the E-4B is designed for apocalyptic scenarios: nuclear war, large-scale attacks or when the entire ground command system is destroyed.
This aircraft can fly continuously for up to 12 hours without refueling, and has the ability to refuel in the air to extend its operating time almost infinitely.

E-4B is EMP-protected, can survive a nuclear explosion, and maintain global communication even when ground command centers are paralyzed.
According to the US Air Force, in case of national emergency or when command and control centers are destroyed, the E-4B will become the "brain" to direct the US armed forces, execute emergency war orders and coordinate with the civilian government.
Inside the E-4B is a complete command system: Global satellite information network, top-secret communication equipment, technical operating center, upgraded electrical and air conditioning systems to cool a series of advanced electronic devices. The aircraft can carry up to 110 people at once, enough for the US President and the entire cabinet to operate the country from the air if Washington D.C. is no longer safe.
The US Air Force currently operates 4 E-4B Nightwatches, of which at least 1 is always on combat duty 24/7. According to official documents, the E-4B has only been used once in a real situation after the 9/11 terrorist attack.
