Greenland views on becoming a US citizen

Thanh Hà |

The vast majority of Greenland residents do not want to become US citizens, the Financial Times quoted a sociological survey conducted by Verian.

In the poll, 85% of Greenlandese people surveyed did not want to become Americans because they believe that living standards in Denmark are much higher. In particular, residents on Greenland Island are also concerned about crime and expensive medical costs in the US.

The article also said that the US could grant each of the 57,000 Greenland residents an US passport and $1 million if they voluntarily choose to become part of the US. In addition, billionaire Elon Musk could give each Greenland person a Tesla car.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly declared that Greenland should join the US.

In an interview with NBC News in May 2025, he did not rule out the possibility of using force to solve this problem.

On January 6, 2026, the White House emphasized in a statement sent to Reuters that using the US military to win Greenland is always an option that President Donald Trump can use.

By January 7, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that President Donald Trump is actively discussing with his subordinates about the possibility of buying Greenland.

Most recently, on January 9, President Donald Trump continued to push for US control of Greenland, emphasizing: "We will do something about Greenland whether they like it or not". He argued that if the US does not act, other countries will take over Greenland.

Previously, on January 8, the head of the Greenland delegation to the US, Jacob Isbosethsen, shared with the press that: "Greenland is not for sale. I think Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt have made this very clear. Our territory belongs to the people of Greenland.

Next week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet with partners from Denmark and Greenland after Denmark requested an emergency meeting with him.
