The information was released right before the Russia-US summit scheduled for August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska, with the focus on efforts to end the Ukrainian conflict and strengthen bilateral relations.
Speaking to the press on August 12, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "There may be a plan for President Trump to visit Russia in the near future." She also confirmed that Anchorage - the largest city in Alaska - will be the venue for this summit, after many options were considered.
According to the interim schedule, the two leaders Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will have direct exchanges to find the "Best way to end" the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This is a meeting initiated by Mr. Putin himself, through US special agent Steve Witkoff, after the two sides had a 3-hour working session in Moscow last week.
In addition to bilateral talks, Mr. Trump expressed his desire to organize a tripartite conference with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Mr. Zelensky will not be present at the meeting in Alaska this week. The reason, according to the White House, is for the two US-Russia leaders to focus on discussing separately the solution to the conflict.
On the Russian side, President Putin affirmed that he was printsimply not opposed to meeting Mr. Zelensky, but stressed certain conditions are needed before the meeting could take place.
Russia has repeatedly accused the Ukrainian leader of deliberately prolonging an un convalescible war, and questioned Zelenskys legality after his presidency ended last year without holding a new election, citing martial law.
The Trump-P Putin summit in Alaska is considered one of the most notable diplomatic events in 2025, not only because it is the first time the two leaders have had a direct dialogue since Trump returned to the White House, but also because the context of Russia-Western tensions has not cooled down.
Public opinion is waiting to see whether this conference can open the door to a new peace process, and whether the potential visit of the US President to Russia will become the next shocking event on the world geopolitical stage.
