On August 8, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
China's state broadcaster CCTV reported that the phone call was conducted at the request of the Russian leader.
According to CCTV, during the phone call, Mr. Putin informed Mr. Tap Can Binh about the "recent communication and exchange situation" between Russia and the US, as well as the situation in Ukraine.
President Xi Jinping told President Putin that China was happy to see Russia and the US improve relations.
"China is pleased to see Russia and the US maintain contact, improve relations and promote a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis," Xinhua quoted Xi Jinping as saying to Putin.
President Putin and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet to discuss measures to end the conflict in Ukraine and other issues. Both sides confirmed that preparations for the summit are underway and proposed a meeting that could take place next week, although the specific date, time and location have not yet been determined.
During the phone call, Chairman Xi Jinping " pointed out that there are no simple solutions to complex problems" and stressed that "China will always support peace building and promote negotiations," CCTV reported.
President Putin is expected to visit China during his trip that began in late August. He will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, as well as the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Russian leader is expected to hold talks with the Chinese president.
