A US official said that the US military has launched new attacks in Iran, targeting a location around the Strait of Hormuz, posing a threat to US forces and commercial transport.
The official also added that the US has intercepted drones launched from Iran.
Three explosions were heard east of Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city and Iranian naval base near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.
The explosions were reported at around 1:30 am on May 28, local time, and caused Bandar Abbas's air defense system to be activated in a short time.
The exact location and origin of these sounds are still unknown, and investigations are continuing to determine them," Fars, a media outlet linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said.
The latest attacks took place just 2 days after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed a series of previous "self-defense attacks" on southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian ships intending to drop naval mines.
Iran condemned previous attacks, calling this action a "serious breach of the ceasefire agreement" and declared Iran "will not let any hostile actions be repelled".
The attacks took place as US President Donald Trump urged Iran to reach a longer-term agreement with the US and threatened to resume a large-scale bombing campaign if Iran does not agree with the terms set by the US.
