US plans to deploy ground forces to Iran, targeting Kharg and Hormuz islands

The US Department of War is preparing for weeks-long ground operations in Iran - according to information in the Washington Post on March 28.

If US President Donald Trump approves, this plan will mark a new phase of the conflict in Iran, which may be significantly more dangerous for the US military than the first 4 weeks, according to officials.

The ground mission that the US deploys will also not be a full-scale invasion, but may include raids with the participation of special forces and regular infantry.

Sources say that this operation could cause US soldiers to face "unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles, ground fire and homemade explosives".

The Pentagon's mission is to prepare to give the Commander-in-Chief maximum choice. That does not mean the President has made a decision," White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.

The discussions included potential activities targeting the island of Kharg - Iran's important oil export center - and coastal raids near the Strait of Hormuz to neutralize threats to maritime transport.

Officials noted that the mission could last "a few weeks, not a few months", while others estimated the operation would take place in "a few months".

Whether President Donald Trump approves the plan to deploy troops on land is still uncertain, the US newspaper noted.

President Donald Trump once said: "I will not send troops anywhere" while Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared, "this will not be a prolonged conflict" and the US can achieve its goals without deploying ground forces.

According to officials, 13 US soldiers have been killed and more than 300 injured in attacks across the Middle East since the US and Israel launched an offensive against Iran in late February.

The escalating situation in the region to date has killed more than 1,300 Iranians, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has responded to US and Israeli attacks by using drones and missiles to attack Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries with US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation.

Information that the Pentagon is preparing for weeks-long ground operations in Iran was revealed in the context of thousands of US soldiers and marines being deployed to the Middle East.
