According to RT, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia also accused militant groups in Eastern Ghouta of using clo gas.
"According to our information, on March 5, Al-Nusra Front fighters used clo toxic gas in East Ghouta, injuring 30 civilians. All of this is being done to prepare the basis for unilateral military actions against a sovereign Syria. The suburbs of Damascus cannot remain a terrorist base forever," Nebenzia said.
The Russian diplomat stressed that the Syrian government's attack in Eastern Ghouta did not violate Resolution 2401 - which allowed the continued fight against terrorism. He added that terrorists regularly attack hospitals and other civilian facilities.
"Since the resolution was passed, more than 100 people have died in these attacks and hundreds were injured. More than a hospital has been shelled," Nebenzia said.
The Russian diplomat pointed out that the conflict in Syria and especially the Eastern Ghouta has been used by Western countries to "make endless accusations against Russia" while "doing nothing to improve the situation in Syria".
The official also expressed doubts about the UN-supplied casualty figures in Syria, questioned the source of information and requested more transparency and specificity in further information provision.
Previously, the US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikkei Haley accused Russia and Syria of violating the Security Council resolution and killing innocent civilians. She warned that the US will take unilateral action if the Security Council fails to resolve the situation in Syria.
The diplomat mentioned last year's US missile attack on Syria, following accusations of Syria using chemical weapons, as an example of what the US may do.
